Physical view of compact Disc

CDs consist of a cake of polycarbonate of 1.2 mm thick covered with a thin layer of aluminum protected by a film of lacquer. This film can also be printed to illustrate the disc. The Printing techniques are of two types offset and screen printing. The various layers are deposited by the machine in the liquid around the center of the disc and spread over the surface by centrifugal force, to ensure a distribution

Information on a standard CD is encoded on a track of cells in spiral molded polycarbonate. Each cell is approximately between 125 nm and 500 nm wide and varies between 833 nm and 3.5 m in length. The space between the tracks is 1.6 m. To give an idea of the scale if the disc was placed at a size of football stadium, a cell would have the size of a grain of sand. The spiral begins at the center of the disc and ends in the periphery, which allows multiple disk sizes.

A CD is read by a laser diode of 780 nm wavelength through the polycarbonate layer. The difference in depth between a cell and the flat surface is a quarter the wavelength of the laser which allows a phase shift of half a wavelength between a reflection laser in a cell and the surface. The destructive interference caused by this reflection reduces the intensity of reflected light in a cell compared to a reflection on the surface. By measuring this intensity with a photodiode one is able to read data on disk. Hollows and bumps do not represent the 0 and 1 binary information. Thereafter, the data passed to the mill EFM used in the encoding audio data into digital data for audio CD, and finally get the raw audio data.
